Our school is a therapeutic day school program, the task of which is to provide emotional support and academic opportunities to children who have been unable to succeed in community school settings due to emotional, learning, and behavioral difficulties. The majority of our students live at a residential children's home and are wards of the state.
Our school runs as a trauma-informed program, aiming to help our students grow from their pasts and learn how to cope in effective ways.
Despite the challenges that our students face, they are incredible children. Their resiliency, love for learning, and curiosity are truly inspiring. I strive to make my classroom a welcoming and safe community and to help my students explore learning and grow into independent and productive citizens.
My Project
My students come from challenging backgrounds which have manifested in some difficult behaviors.
Often when children have tough behaviors, they become isolated to the world around them, making their exposure to typical life experiences very limited.
One of my goals as a teacher of my population of students is to expose them to as many life experiences as possible in a safe and meaningful way.
In February, we have the amazing Winter Olympics upon us! I plan to take this amazing experience and expose my students to this huge world event.
I am requesting books on the Olympics and winter sports like skiing, figure skating, hockey and snowboarding. We will learn about the sports during morning meeting through read alouds. Throughout the Olympics, we will keep track of how many medals the US has won, watch recaps of amazing Olympic moments on YouTube, and read news stories to stay up to date.
Exposing students to the world around them and all we have to offer is such a motivator. Thank you for helping bring knowledge, experience, and the world to my students!
