Old School Printmaking: Hands-on Block Printing

My students need hands on experience working with real materials. Give them the joy and frustration of planning and cutting and printing a linoleum block with several colors of block printing ink and 3 sets of easy-cut linoleum.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

In printmaking, it's all black and white. Students must learn to plan and make decisions before they act, as each cut is essential to the artwork. Our students need hands-on, project based learning. Your gift will give 100 students the opportunity to create a unique print and teach lifelong skills.

My students are all in a Visual Arts program and many travel as much as one hour each way to attend an audition free public visual and performing arts program.

Our students are bright, respectful motivated and engaged. We are located in a city with an exciting art world, but buying art supplies is a challenge for our low income students. Students are excited about printmaking and multiple editions as it relates to much of the street art, computer art and graphic design of today. They need to know the rich history as well as experience life when carving a print was high tech. Our students come to us with very little hands-on practical experience, and this will be a valuable unit that allows them to learn the consequences of cutting away from a printing surface. It is a fundamental art skill, and you will be helping us train the designers of the future.

My Project

If you have memories of ever cutting a block print, you know it is challenging and rewarding and each cut is important. You will give my students the challenge of working through this intense process of printmaking which requires skill, strategy and high level critical thinking. I am requesting 2 classroom printmaking sets that will include 48 handles and a variety of block print cutting blades, a sheet of linoleum for each student, brayers to roll ink onto the blocks when they have been cut, and printing ink. We will have all we need to produce 100 original prints this year and and supply my classroom with all the tools needed for printmaking in future years. Printmaking trains them to be critical thinkers, as well as creative spirits! This project will lead to an art exhibition this spring.

Each year I see students who make, build, sew, and construct less.

They are becoming digital citizens and are used to screens, not kitchens, workshops, and garages. My students need exciting hands-on projects to develop their sense of how to construct the stuff of the future. Help these young designers thrive in their future!
