Help me give my students opportunities to apply critical thinking skills to solve logic puzzles and sharpen their abilities in math and science via collaborative or competitive play through games like mancala, sequence, and shut the box!
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The children who come through the library doors at our preK-8 school are in search for so many different things each day. Some are looking for companionship or a friendly face. Others want to pick up the next book in their favorite series. Still others burst in with energy and excitement just to "play." It's the curiosity, enthusiasm, and wonder of the students that makes working with them such a joy!
These students are risk-takers, innovators, and makers who are eager to learn new skills and apply the knowledge.
Unfortunately, not all have the opportunity to explore or the access to technology or equipment that will foster their interests, creativity, or potential. The library provides an open, flexible, welcome space where children can pursue passions solo, in pairs, small groups, or even multiple classes at once.
To continue to support the growing passion shown by these budding inventors, designers, and leaders, our exploration center needs to grow!
My Project
What better way to have fun learning than by playing games with friends and family? The math, science, and logic games chosen for this project will become part of our library's exploration center--an area which is utilized throughout the day by children in grades kinder through eighth. Students frequently spend mornings and recess in our space, playing and learning with each other. Puzzles and games are a popular request, and we need more to keep up with the demand!
Interactive, hands-on game play emphasizes many of the skills we aim to develop in growing children--collaboration, strategic planning, good sportsmanship, risk-taking, and operating successfully within a set structure.
The games and puzzles funded by this project will provide learning disguised as fun! Children will be drawn in by the competition and desire to get better at play.
Our library programming also includes family events and in-school competitions. In the past, we've offered both literacy and STEM activities with which parents/guardians and their children can engage. This year (and with this funding), we would could expand not only the number of games for families to experience, but also a variety of types from which to choose. Additionally, we would be able to facilitate more school-wide challenges for student teams to compete in gaming and problem-solving feats of brain power!
