My Project
Ola i ka wai; water is life. Living on a small island in the middle of the ocean, my students have wondered and explored the life of our island, water. They are able to share the main parts of the water cycle, and how the water cycle describes how our island and the people on our island prosper. To help my students better understand what happens to our water here on our island, I want them to surround themselves around water. I want them to notice different contaminants that affect our water daily. In doing so I hope that they will build a conception that contaminants in our water will not just affect the water that surrounds us, but also our survival and the survival of our island.
In celebration of Earth Day, I plan on extending my students' knowledge past the classroom.
I plan on having my students take their beach tools to the beach with their families to clean up the ocean. I also want my students to find wai sources that are around them, and clean up those streams and ponds as well. As students engage in these practices with their families, I will have the students, in school, journal their findings and understandings of contaminants in our wai. I hope that students will be able to understand that when our wai is contaminated that contamination will move into us. Only when we do our part and malama i ka wai, care for our water, then we can make a change to stop contaminations from entering our water sources.
