Oil Pastels and Paints for Budding Artists

Help me give my students new art materials to create masterpieces at school. They love creating and would have a great time using these new mediums!

My Students

My school is nestled in an urban area in Southwest Detroit. 95% of our students are Hispanic and some are recent immigrants. 100% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. Many live at the poverty line or just below it.

Due to the many hardships and challenges faced by our students, it is important that teachers find creative ways to keep kids engaged and motivated to learn when they are so often living in stressful environments.

Our students are fun and hardworking, but many come from broken homes and situations where they are forced to grow up too fast. School is a place where they can feel safe and depend on the people around them.

My Project

There are many schools in Detroit that aren't lucky enough to have an art teacher. Our school has a great one and teachers also incorporate art into their learning activities as well. Getting the opportunity to create is an integral part of students falling in love with learning. Unfortunately, art supplies can be used up quickly when it is shared by so many students and is expensive to replace.

Help my students explore new mediums and expand their creativity by helping us purchase oil pastels and watercolors.

So far this year, we have been learning about famous artists such as Frida Kahlo, Pablo Picasso, and Andy Warhol. We read about the artist as a class, discuss how we feel about their artwork and then students get to create an artwork in the style of the artist. My students have created awesome Cubist self-portraits, pop-art and their own version of Starry Night by Van Gogh. We will even be visiting the Detroit Institute of Arts for a field trip later this year. Please help ignite the love of art within my students. I know that it is truly changing and improving the way that they learn and grow.
