Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach 11th grade students at a college prep, public charter high school. We are a high needs school serving a truly diverse and closely knit group of students who attend our school for one primary purpose: they want to be the first person in their family to graduate from college. My job is to help them get there!

Painting is a rigorous, therapeutic, process-oriented, and enjoyable skill, and my students are HOOKED. They have been painting with acrylics (donated by Donors Choose funders!) for the past year in order to symbolize Shakespearean characters, design unique "code names," and examine the meaning and reality of the American Dream. Their skill and sophistication has grown. I'd like to take them to the next level.

Every day students in my class take Cornell notes while I teach a mini-lesson on a piece of art from American Art History. They use their notes to write synthesis answers that show the changes and trends in our country's arts. As a culminating project, students will write a college-ready research paper about the work of an American Artist of their choice. While students write their papers, I hope to engage them in the world of their chosen artist by offering them the new experience of making an oil painting that depicts one of their artist's most famous works.

Oil paints, brushes, and canvases are expensive, and they provide a completely different painting experience than working with acrylics. I have worked with these students for 2 years, and I believe this new painting adventure will pay off. Your support and donation will help me to engage them in a meaningful writing and art making project that will build their capacity as college students in the future. I hope you will support us!
