Oil Immersion Microscope for my Biology Classes

My students have a high-powered microscope.

FULLY FUNDED! Mr. Kordella's classroom raised $483

This project is fully funded

I teach advanced-level introductory biology, and upper-level biology. Our school is a mixed-income region, with many of our students receiving free and reduced lunches. In spite of this, we have a strong academic tradition that I would like to maintain. Our equipment is becoming rather antiquated, and our district is not inclined to assist us in modernizing our scientific equipment, especially given the recent financial debacle.

Many of my students express strong interest in studying infectious disease and microbial pathogens, but lack the equipment to do any practical study. Many others could be attracted to these disciplines if they had the ability to appreciate micro-organisms, which I feel they would if they had equipment that facilitated more hands-on experiences with them. I would also like to train students in more advanced microscopy techniques, such as use of oil immersion microscopy.

I would like to have at least one microscope capable of 1000x magnification. Our current equipment only provides for magnifications up to 400x. This magnification is sufficient for protozoan and other unicellular eukarya, but is inadequate for any practical study of bacteria. A powerful microscope is a critical tool in microbiological studies, and a better microscope would help my students in their culturing and identifying bacteria.

Your generous contribution will empower my students with a better understanding of bacteria, giving them better preparation should they wish to go on to study medicine, immunology, virology, microbiology, etc.
