My Students
If my teachers ever called on me for an answer back in the day, I would get so nervous. I could feel my heart pounding in my throat. Today, I understand why some students don't speak up in class. But if they never voice their opinions or give an answer, I truly don't know what they are thinking.
The Art room is the center of creativity in our diverse school.
Our school is a small school with approximately 450 students who are all eager to learn! Our students come from a variety of different economic backgrounds with over 45% of our students receiving free or reduced lunch. They are growing and learning in the same small, tight knit, school community that inspired me to be a teacher.
They are dreamers, thinkers, talkers, and questioners. They are mini inspirations to themselves and others around them, even if they don't know it yet. They are budding artists, world travelers, scientists, entrepreneurs, teachers... They are our future and I want to give them a great start to their school years.
My Project
Plickers is a powerfully simple tool that lets teachers collect real-time formative assessment data without the need for student devices. My challenge, every day in the classroom, is to have full participation from my students. I need to know what they are thinking, but this is no easy task. There are strategies I can use to encourage everyone to speak; however, my dilemma is beyond simply getting kids to raise their hands in class. The ipad and Plickers is the perfect solution. It allows students to answer questions while remaining anonymous. They just hold up their cards and I scan them. I will be able to read all responses on my iPad screen. And I will be able to identify who gave which answer.
With an iPad and Plickers, students will be engaged and won't be able to "hide" in class anymore.
They can comfortably answer questions without feeling embarrassed or worrying they have the wrong answer. Plickers is something I will be able to use across the curriculum for years to come. It will open doors that were closed to many students.
