Help me give my students this these books for our classroom library, a diverse collection of stories from various genres: award winners, young adult books, and classics.
Most of my students are part of a multimedia academy within a diverse urban high school. Some of our students have a history of being very strong academically; others have struggled academically in the past. What they all share is a desire to learn about media from an artistic perspective and develop a clear direction in high school. These students learn how to use digital technology to express their ideas and learning. I teach them English language arts within the academy in a way that is designed to inspire their use of new media. We explore ideas about story and how they might be depicted visually, and we explore their own stories and visions.
Most of these students stay in the program for three years and leave high school not only with a diploma but also with a solid set of skills that few graduates have.
However, perhaps more importantly, they leave high school having had an unusual experience of bonding and collaboration among their peers and teachers. These students are among the most creative in our school, and I have the pleasure of watching them develop over three years.
My Project
At the beginning of the year I like to tell my students, "Any of you who think you don't like reading are mistaken. You just haven't found the right book."
More than ever, with video on demand and digital gaming competing for their time, students need to experience the magic of reading great books, books that leave them wanting more.
Why would I want my own classroom library when we have a fabulous school library? For the same reason grocery stores put the candy at the checkout counter: temptation. I have built a classroom library that I am proud of, but over the past few years some books have gone missing and, of course, new, exciting titles have been published. Help me replenish and add to my collection of books so that students continue to develop their interest in reading.
