My students need a variety of current and interesting leveled books, as well as introductory chapter books, to enhance their excitement and interest for learning.

My Students
These students are amazing children who are full of eagerness and excitement for learning. Because of that, the importance of an updated library, filled with a variety of book types and genres, is at the top of a first-grade teacher's list of "must-haves" in the classroom. It is so important for students to love reading. Through books, my students are able to learn morals, better voice their emotions, and just get lost in an imaginary world.
So many new ideas can be introduced by rich, engaging books and lifetime learners created by captivating stories.
My love of teaching comes from watching my students become completely engrossed in books, conversing with one another about the elements in a story, or sharing their own opinions on the book. My job is to teach the power of literature and a love for reading and interesting books are a necessity for that.
My Project
These books will provide a more current and exciting variety of books to choose to read during our reading time. Students have the opportunity to read in groups and with partners in order to increase their reading fluency, conversational skills, and academic language. Having a classroom library filled with books of interest to them will help support these goals and only aid in the learning of these skills.
We have three all encompassing units throughout the school year.
They are fairy tales, weather, and animals. Within these units, my students will have the opportunity to transform themselves into princes/princesses (or evil witches!), meteorologists, and zoologists as we completely immerse ourselves in texts and write about our ideas and learnings. Several of the books on my "wish list" will directly support these units and better enrich my class's learning.
Many of the other books on my list (Cam Jansen, Mercy Watson, and Fly Guy) are high-interest books for the kids that are on the cusp of their "reading lightbulb" going off and often get some of my reluctant readers excited about reading. I still remember the book series that fueled my love of reading, and I hope that one of students can say the same for a book they read in my classroom.
