"I thought this was going to be hard, but I just tried and it wasn't!" All you have to do is try!
Our school is a progressive elementary school in the heart of the East Village.
My students are inquisitive and curious about each other and the world. They love taking adventures through books as well as through the rooftop farm where they plant and harvest produce for snack. A day in my classroom involves wonder, curiosity, excitement, joy, problem solving, and friendship! The students in my class love to explore and be creative, building with Lego's, cardboard, paper and anything else they can get their hands on, often working together to share ideas and support each other. As the first and second graders are learning to read and do math, they are also learning to work together to problem solve, try things, make modifications, and try try again.
My Project
Our social studies curriculum this year is neighborhoods and architecture. This 3D Printer would greatly help the architects of our class design and build 3D structures, using what they have learned about architectural elements, as well as cultural styles from around the world. It will allow them to bring the abstract concepts they read about and observe from a distance to something they can hold in their hands.
There are many moments in my classroom where pride is seen on a child's face.
Some of those moments include:
- The first time they realize they can read.
- The first time someone can read their writing without help.
- When they accomplish their goal, whether that be skipping 2 bars on the monkey bars or tying their shoes
- When they see something they only thought existed in their head can be seen and understood by others (drawing, model, story, etc.)
This project can help those things happen.
