My students live and go to school on the southwest side of Evanston. Most of my students are of low socioeconomic status and are lacking the resources that they need to help them achieve in ways they never knew possible.
Despite their modest upbringings, my students are some of the brightest and hardest working people you will meet.
They care for each other, hold themselves to high expectations, and have a burning curiosity to learn more about the world around them. They are in fifth grade, so they are at the cusp of transitioning to middle school and young adulthood. Some of them are spunky, wise, bookish, shy - we have the whole range of personalities!
My school is full of dedicated teachers working to ensure the highest level of success for our students. However, the educational landscape of Illinois is not the best right now for public schools and we are constantly faced with unequal funding, school closings, and job cuts.
My Project
Each day, the students in my classroom strive for excellence during small group and whole group instruction. While I always aim to make each lesson engaging and build in opportunities for movement and collaboration, I would like to enhance my students' experiences this year by implementing flex seating in our classroom.
Flex seating allows for more student choice, helps build community, allows for more movement, and adds an element of comfort that the traditional classroom lacks.
I always say that “collaboration is key” and flex seating also allows students to easily pair up, work in small groups, and discuss as a whole class.
Donations to this project will help not only with our focus and determination but also with differentiated instruction and student motivation throughout the year.
