My Students

"The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go." -Dr. Seuss Kindergarten not only provides the foundation for reading skills, but provides teachers with the first opportunity to have children fall in love with learning and reading.

Our school belongs to the largest, urban school district in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Around 80% of our school population qualifies for free and reduced lunch. Our students face many challenges at home and at school. These students are bright and eager to learn, but do not always have the resources readily available to achieve success. Many of our students have never held a book before Kindergarten, nor have they had an adult read them a bedtime story.

My Project

Everyday is a new adventure in Kindergarten. We spend the first two and a half hours of school working on literacy skills. Our curriculum is very rigorous and we have a strict schedule we must keep. However, that all changes during Read Across America week. During that week, our students get to engage in fun, hands on activities with a Dr. Seuss theme. I scavenge the school's library and bug other teachers to find all the Dr. Seuss works. The students read all of the Easy Readers and I read the picture books. We make Green Eggs and Ham and wear Cat in the Hat hats. Getting to see Seussical the Musical would help bring these stories to life. My students will get to experience theater with their favorite literary characters and fall more in love with reading.

My students get to go on very few field trips during the school year.

My kids have never gone to the theater nor have they seen a live production. The opportunity to see Seussical the Musical may be the only chance my students will have to see a professional production in their school careers. A field trip to see Seussical the Musical will not other further enrich my students' literacy experiences, but it will give them a memory to cherish for the rest of their lives.
