Help me give my students the educational experience of traveling to the Museum of Mathematics in New York City to engage in a full day of exploration of the museum's unique exhibits!
As a 5th grade teacher in a high needs elementary/middle school in Queens, NY, I know many of my students face challenges at home, challenges that often affect their learning experiences both in and out of the classroom.
In spite of those challenges, my students demonstrate resilience and determination and a willingness to take risks in learning new things.
They show excitement to engage in new experiences and opportunities. And in my opinion, they deserve the very best of those opportunities.
My Project
At times, it can be quite challenging for students to connect the relevance of what they're learning within the four walls of the classroom to their experiences in the real world. "Why do I need to know this?" is a question often asked!
A trip to the National Museum of Mathematics will offer my students the awesome opportunity to engage first hand in connecting their ordinary learning in the classroom to unique experiences that encourage inquiry and curiosity about mathematical ideas and concepts in the world around them.
With this opportunity, I hope to continue to show my students that math is not only about numbers, equations, and algorithms, but about understanding.
