Many times throughout the day we gather in one area on the floor. That's where many exciting moments happen! Children laugh out loud to stories that they hear, share their thinking, learn new things, wonder about what they see... We gather together to learn and grow together on this floor spot!
My students are curious and eager to learn!
When I sit in my teacher chair in our meeting area, I see 21 sets of eyes looking at me as if to say, "Now what? What do I get to do next?" Even though we live in a rural area in Iowa, children's learning opportunities are endless. We sit on the floor together to learn through books, videos, video conferences and social media. My students have an elbow partner to sit with when we are working on projects. They love sharing their ideas with their partners and learn from each other.
My Project
A class meeting area should look fun and inviting. Our class would love to have a large carpet that has colorful squares to sit on when we meet on the floor. It will give students sense of community and sense of belonging to sit on the same carpet. It also will teach young children about physical space and how to respect other students' space by sitting in their own square.
My students spend many hours in the classroom everyday.
They should have a nice environment that would support their development and learning. I can already see my students wanting to come and sit on the carpet square to learn when I call them to the floor!
