My Students

"When we treat children's play as seriously as it deserves, we are helping them to feel the joy that's to be found in the creative spirit." (Fred Rogers) It is my hope that the funding of this project will help my at-risk students find the "creative joy" that learning brings.

In our school nearly 90% of the population is eligible for free or reduced lunch.

Often the children come to school with a limited amount of "life experiences" such as going to a zoo, an airport, a restaurant. A delay in oral language is common with our students. This delay can greatly impede vocabulary acquisition and reading development. Another challenge for my students is that many of them have difficulty interacting in a positive way with peers. It is critical that we provide opportunities for them to engage positive ways.

My Project

The resources from this project will be used in a dramatic play area in our classroom. I am requesting a Handyman Tool Set, a Real-Working Cash Register, Deluxe Kitchen Set, My Ice Cream Parlor, Let's Pretend Restaurant Writing Box and Sliceable Fruits and Veggies. These materials will provide children the opportunity to explore and engage in situations they might not experienced prior to coming to school. The resources will help develop oral language including vocabulary development which will aid in reading development skills. Also, the resources will allow children to interact with peers in a positive way, helping them to practice sharing and compromising - both necessary life skills. Hopefully by providing realistic items the childrens' "creative spirit" will be activated and ultimately a life-long love of language and learning will emerge.

Due to continued budget cuts in our district, it has become increasingly difficult providing my students with the materials necessary to develop further learning skills.

The materials in this project will help students in my classroom develop oral language, increase vocabulary, learn positive ways to interact with peers and show them how fun learning can be.
