My students need book bins! I have so many books that they get overwhelmed by the choices. The bins will give some organization and help struggling readers make better choices.
My 100 students are typical high school students who have a mix of dreams and aspirations. However, what is not so typical are the barriers that they have in their way. I teach in an urban high school that has a wonderful mix of students but it also qualifies for 100% free student lunch (which is a measure of student poverty level). 70% of my students enter 10th grade at least 2-3 years behind in reading and writing. They do not read much or at all at home.
In order for my students to succeed, they need to read more on their own.
I have the books-boy, do I have books-but I need to get them reading them. Once we find the best fit for them, the students begin to read and improve their reading levels. Engaging students in reading for pleasure is a sure way to begin that process.
My Project
"You sure have a lot of books, Mrs. Sergent". Over twenty years in education has given me an excellent classroom library. In years past, my library was an active part of my students' lives. However, something has changed, I now have too many books for my bookcases! This has caused students to not use my library because they just get overwhelmed by the selections, which were all over the room. The only students who used my library were students from past years who knew what I had. My current students just walk away.
So, how to get them to use the books?
My solution is to better organize my books by author and genre using the nifty book bins. These will allow the students to quickly find the book that they are interested in and read it. It will also increase storage capabilities so that the books are located all in one place.
