My Students
My students like so many have been affected by the Covid-19 pandemic and continue to be affected by positive test results, quarantine and the strains of isolation. Students in my school district have been virtual learning since March 2020 without all the wonderful opportunities in person learning has to offer. We are back in person however still impacted by the effects of covid. I want to offer my students the opportunity to heal and prosper with exciting hands-on learning. I hope each learning experience offered in my classroom inspires them to reconnect with learning and drives their intrinsic motivation in order to take concepts, ideas and learning goals beyond my instruction.
With this project, students will have an opportunity to dissect a squid as a connection to their ELA curriculum; why do people explore the sea?
It will also set a model for students how to take care of school materials and provide advancement for learning.
My students are from Baltimore and are part of program focused on NEVER GIVING UP! I am inspired by them, their thoughtfulness and perseverance.
My Project
Students will be highly engage with our ELA Curriculum and essential question; Why do people explore the sea? Students will read The Giant Squid; is this sea monster is real. What is the story of this mythic creature? Why is it so hard to study? What secrets does it keep? Clyde Roper, ocean scientist and squid expert, has been seeking this secretive creature for decades. In the book, students will read how he and other researchers unravel its mysteries. This book and hand-ons lab will help to answer these questions, make connections and create engagement like no other.
Carolina's Young scientist squid kit will pique students' interest in animal anatomy with the squid—a fascinating invertebrate with peculiar structures that students can compare to higher- and lower-level animals.
Students will collaboratively work with a partner in order to support conversation and curiosity.
