My students need an awesome sharpener that can keep up with all the creative, narrative, and informative writing done throughout the school days.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
A typical scholarly day in my classroom starts off with my scholars writing a response to a creative writing prompt already on the Smart board. "What will we be writing about today?" I love to keep my writers and their pencils SHARP first thing in the morning.
My awesome students are always excited to start the day!
They have a lot of energy. Let me repeat that, A lot of energy! Keeping them focused on putting that energy into learning can be a challenge some days. I found that writing is an excellent way for my kids to release some of that energy. It allows them to focus more on their writing and less on their WIGGLES.
My awesome school is in an urban area. Our school population is a diverse multicultural group of motivated learners. My class is one of two special needs classes within the school. However, when you enter our classroom and meet my students, there is no difference. My students are a wonderful group of kids that are so eager to learn.
So keeping my scholars active and engaged learners is very important. Whenever possible I include colorful writing paper, different size and colorful pencils, and other types of engaging materials. It is difficult with our school budget to get supplies replenished or any materials donated.
My Project
We write throughout the day. Students are writing in notebooks 90% of our class time. It is a wonderful way to show student thinking, strategies, and for me, as the teacher, to assess students. Valuable learning time gets lost because of our broken sharpeners and students lack of their own personal size sharpeners. It is a high poverty school and supplies rarely get donated. We often do without.
A reliable and working electric sharpener would be a great addition in our classroom and will allow us to continue the momentum of creative, informative, and persuasive writing without stopping the flow. We too often have to send someone to the main office to sharpen pencils.
My hands and my students hands will be saved using the electric pencil sharpener I am asking for.
It takes quite a bit of time everyday to get our pencils as sharp as we like them to be by using the hand sharpeners and I would love to be able to have an electric sharpener that can handle my class. Having pointy SHARPEN pencils will allow my scholars to have a bigger smile on their face while working hard.
