This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember the first time you use a micro pipette? In order to do the electrophoresis lab accurately in my IB/AP biology class my students need the micro pipettes. Accuracy is very important when measuring out the amount of DNA/Protein for the electrophoresis to work.
My students are in a very large public school district in which resources are very limited.
Our school is in a low income area in which our free and reduce lunch is over 90%. I usually purchase many of my lab supplies at the local dollar store in order to complete their IB/AP biology labs.
Most of my students will be the first in their family to go to college. Our school is about 59% African American, 39% Hispanic and with 4% Limited English Learners. Our low income population is over 80%, therefore we collect very little in activity money for the school.
We do have the International Baccalaureate and Advance Placement programs to help our students compete with other schools in our district that have selective enrollment/college prep classes.
My Project
My students need these micro pipettes in order to measure the correct amount of DNA or proteins to be analyzed in our electrophoresis machine that I just received in another donation from DonorsChoose. I could try using the regular plastic pipettes but the accuracy and the use of the micro pipettes is a very special tool in a biotechnology lab.
Hands-on activities and using tools for specific projects are very important in science--actions speak louder than word.
In order to compete with the WORLD we need to expose our high school students in the United States with the proper tools and procedures to keep us competitive! We need to enhance our high school courses so students will LOVE SCIENCE. I smile every time a students tells me this is their favorite class and they LOVE doing experiment. Hands-on experiences and the use of "Cool Tools" make connections.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
