My Students

Do you remember the first book you ever read that opened up that window to another dimension and made you want to continue to read and explore those dimensions? Well, my students have not yet developed the love of Greek Myths. It's time to spark their imagination and bring those Gods to life.

I work in an inner city Chicago school where the socio-economic status is 99.9% poverty.

Students are not afforded the opportunity to have books of interest or to purchase books that they would enjoy reading. I have five classrooms of mixed gender students. I teach middle school grades 6th, 7th, and 8th. I would love to purchase a set of novels that my 7th and 8th grade students can explore. I have energetic students who are bored with traditional textbooks and have a hunger for fictional text. With these books we will have classroom discussions, debates, Socratic circles, research projects, perform plays and classroom presentations. I've read aloud some stories about some of the Gods already and find students wanting to know more. They come up with questions which make them think critically about the characters and situations each character faces. Learning about Greek Myths sparked my interest in reading and I want the same thing to happen for my students.

My Project

My students will learn the rich history of Greek Mythology. Some of the activities that students will work on will be to create their own myths, write a song or poem about a god they will research, prepare to answer questions about their god they researched from their peers, create a poster board with background information on their god or goddess and go beyond expectations. Students will also create a classroom newspaper listing some of their poems, plays, songs and events taking place within the lives of some of the Gods. This novel will engage the students interest and make them want to know more about Greek Mythology. Students will want to share this book with their family and friends and not put it down. I want to give my students the opportunity to be exposed to rich literature. This was one of the first books that I had to purchase in school and I continue to thank my teacher for exposing me to Greek Mythology.

My students need an awakening!

Learning about Greek Hero's, Monsters and Gods will ignite and cultivate their minds. I feel it will develop students into life long readers. It's hard at my school to get students to pick up a book on their own. I want to impose this book on them to get them to synthesis, analysis and evaluate more when they read. I know students will be transformed and want to dissect other great pieces of literature. I will get my students to read by any means necessary!
