My Students

The first graders at my school are some of the most compassionate and determined children you would ever want to work with. Their eagerness to learn and to help others is truly heartwarming.

Each day my students enter the school eager to grow and learn to become better students.

They amaze me every day with how they connect their learning to their lives. My heart swells with pride when they say, "I get it, Mrs. Keys!" The way they solve problems and persevere is simply awe inspiring.

My Project

Teaching phoneme awareness is essential to becoming a better reader. Students need to be able to build words using tactile strategies to help ingrain the skills in their brains. As a student manipulates letters to build words, it helps to build letter-sound awareness and word recognition skills.

Tactile strategies improve phonemic awareness.

The students will build a word with their magnetic letter tiles and magnetic boards. The student will then change one or two sounds (letters) to make a new word. This strategy motivates and engages more students, because the student is allowed to move the magnets around to build the new words.
