Off to the Races: Pinewood Derby Car Races, That Is!

Help me give my students the experience of building their own derby car and racing it against their classmates, all the while learning about Newton’s laws of motion.

My Project

8th-grade students who are learning about Newton’s Laws will create a Pinewood Derby car from a block of wood to race against their classmates. They will design a shape, use saws and tools to cut and sand the wood, and finish by painting their car. Students will need to explain how the shape, design, and mass are all influenced by Newton’s laws.

Students will also focus on how to get the mass of their car just right to try to have the fastest speed on the official Pinewood Derby track.

The winners in each class will go head-to-head with the principal's car!
