Off to a STEM Start to the School Year!

My Project

First impressions are key, especially on the first day of school. Many first school days are full of rules, expectations and boring name games. Our middle school students deserve a better experience to set the tone for the rest of the school year.

For the 7th year, our school is planning for the two first days of the school year to be full of STEM challenges that will build both community and excitement about returning to school.

Students will work in teams to use simple materials like note cards, tape, and paper clips to solve engineering challenges that spark their imaginations. We've held this engineering challenge on the first day of school for the past 6 years, and we found students were dramatically more engaged and excited on the first day than ever before. Each homeroom class will also work together to design a Mission Patch, just like every NASA mission crew does.

We are an aerospace and engineering magnet school; these materials will allow all students to start the year with an aerospace and engineering focus while building their investment in our school community. When their parents ask about the first day of school, we hope that our students will have plenty to say this year.
