This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"RUMBLE, GRUMBLE, GURGLE, ROAR!" Little Penguin isn't the only one who struggles to find something good to eat. My students find themselves in the same predicament on a daily basis, but they don't know the difference between what tastes good to them and what is good for them.

I teach twenty-six English Language Learners who hail from a high-poverty neighborhood.

Common staples in their homes are potato chips, cookies, juice with tons of sugar, and candy. Due to the high crime in our area, many parents are reluctant to take their children outdoors to get physical activity, leading them to live sedentary lives. Although my students like fruits and vegetables, they will always choose to eat junk food before picking up an apple or a carrot because they do not know any better.

My Project

With the resources I am requesting, students will have clear visuals to remind them to make healthier choices when it is time to eat. By incorporating a nutrition activity pad, pillows, and stamps into our health and nutrition curriculum, kinesthetic learners will be more likely to internalize what they are learning, making them more likely to use that information in the future. The smencils and stickers will serve as incentives in place of snacks, which are commonly given (in some classrooms) to encourage students to participate during lessons, teaching students that food is not a reward but rather a necessity.

My students are already at a high-risk for obesity based on their cultural background.

While I can not ensure that they will get enough physical activity at home, with your help I can teach them the fundamentals about health and nutrition, getting them off to a healthy start!
