My Students
My students are high school seniors who are simultaneously excited for and terrified by the prospect of college. In order to help them prepare for the academic demands of college, I have placed heavy reading and writing requirement in our A.P. Literature & Composition class, with a focus on diversity.
My students are the definition of survivors.
They have grown up in some of the toughest neighborhoods in NYC. They fight the norm that surrounds them by deciding to stay in school and better themselves - both academically and emotionally. This group of students has made it to their senior year of high school - a milestone that too many of their friends, family, and former classmates have not yet been able to achieve.
The seniors have big plans for college and want to go on to become nurses, doctors, lawyers, engineers, teachers, and writers. They have only one short year until they will have to navigate the world outside of the school that many of them have known since sixth grade. I want to ensure that they are all given the resources necessary for them to transition from high school to college and beyond.
My Project
I have taught Oedipus Rex almost every year since I started teaching with a focus around the question of if we are able to control our own destinies. Although this play dates back to 429 BC and was clearly not written for a group of NYC high school students, I am always astounded and so moved by how much my student connect with the themes and plot of this play. I have had so many staff members at school tell me about heated debates that have broken out about this text during lunch, gym, and in between classes in the hallway.
This year, more than ever before, reading Oedipus Rex will be so important for my students.
The play opens with a plague that has completely destroyed the city and then delves into the decision making of the leaders in charge. This text will serve as a way for my students to try to make sense of what they have experienced over the course of the past year and chart a path forward.
