This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you ever notice how much more you can get done when things are organized and set up properly? Help us make our learning center time the best it can be!

My urban kindergartners often come to school in September without any prior schooling experience.

Their impoverished homes are not supportive of early learning, so many of them cannot even recognize their own written names or identify any letters of the alphabet. Most of my students are English language learners and begin school with limited English proficiency. These children transform throughout the year and head off to first grade as readers!

My Project

Part of what helps my kindergartners achieve success in literacy is our learning center time. During this time, students practice important skills while I meet with small groups for leveled reading instruction. It's important that this center time be focused and purposeful. There are many little things in this project that will make a huge difference. The 24-compartment sorting boxes will keep the magnetic letters organized, allowing students to find the letters they are looking for more quickly. This will provide more on-task time as students spell more high frequency words or match letters to sounds rather than waste time searching for the letter they need. The white board stands will free up table space for students to put magnetic letter tiles in front of them as they begin spelling simple words. The lowercase letter play-dough stampers will supplement our current collection of uppercase stampers for letter practice tied in with fine motor skill development.

By supporting this project, you will give students a more organized, focused learning center time.

This will help students get more done which will result in more learning and success! The more skills students hone, the more prepared they will be to succeed in first grade.
