Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are interested in their environment. Even though they are land locked and live in a desert or more so because they are, that curiosity is focused on the oceans and the life in the oceans. The next step in that curiosity is what about beyond Earth? Is earth the only world with oceans? Is this something rare? If all life on Earth is tied to water, would we find life on other worlds in their water?
I am creating a unit for my Marine Biology class to expand beyond Earth.
On the Shore’s of Titan’s Farthest Sea by Michael Carroll is a scientific novel students will read. The author presents details of the moon’s geology and marine sciences and much more in a factually accurate hypothetical future of early human colonization on this unique world. In this book Carroll introduces not only information on various types of oceans but also the technology that would make such a future story possible.
My project will include students looking at NASA’s Dragonfly mission which will fly around Titan looking for Origins, signs of life. And Michael Carroll has graciously offered to zoom a meeting with us for a discussion after students have completed the book. Students will then use what they have learned about oceans to create their own world. This project brings in many aspects for students: facts, technology, imagination, reading, exploration beyond. We just need a class set of books to help bridge our world to another.
