The heart of my classroom are my students. I teach an amazing group of 5th grade students! Each student brings unique talents and gifts to our classroom. They are inquisitive by nature, curious to learn about the world around them.
Our school has a total enrollment of approximately 516 students (K-5) and is ethnically diverse.
My students come to our classroom from a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds. My goal is to reach the needs of all of my students through differentiated instruction. I create and facilitate Project-Based Learning opportunities so that my students can apply the knowledge that they acquire to real-world connections in our classroom.
My Project
The Project-Based Learning (PBL) opportunities that I create for my students enables them to experience real-life connections to what they are learning in the classroom. Ocean Scene Investigators (O.S.I.) (my students) will act as marine biologists in this PBL. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) National Marine Sanctuaries System will be used as a foundation in this PBL. O.S.I.s will arrive at their marine lab (our classroom) to investigate the unique environmental hazards that have injured the marine life (the stuffed animals) on their lab tables.
Once they determine what caused the injuries, the students will conduct research the animals utilizing the various non-fiction books.
After collecting facts about the marine animal, to include their habitat, endangered status, and how marine debris impacts the animal, O.S.I.s will write a research summary.
This project will provide my students with an authentic opportunity to create an awareness about the impact of marine debris in our ocean. The culminating activity of this PBL will be an Ocean Summit, hosted by the O.S.I.s, where they will have the opportunity to share their research with an authentic audience of parents, school staff and peers. O.S.I.s will also collaborate to create a multimedia public service announcement about the impact of marine debris in our ocean, which will be shared at the Ocean Summit and on the school's morning news.
