This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
This project was inspired by Beach Buddies- Teach for the Planet. Kindergarten students learn about how liquids are absorbed. Oil absorption differs and learning how is important to understanding the danger oil spills impose upon our environment.
My students are inquisitive learners who need to learn through the application of important topics.
We are a Title I school meaning the majority of the students receive a free or reduced lunch.
They lack many real-world experiences as their parents work to shelter and care for them. Ecological awareness and care for the environment is not a priority in most of our households.
My Project
My students will decorate the canvas bags with the fabric markers to collect debris from our playground. We will use this debris as part of our ocean clean-up.
We will study ocean life through an examination of the specimens as well as watching the dvds to explore and learn more about aquatic animals and their needs. Every day we will read one of the books and discuss the importance of keeping our environment clean.
We will recreate an oil spill in the classroom and work to clean it up and save the aquatic animals affected by the spill and other ocean debris. Different materials like cotton balls and swabs will be used as well as oil-absorbing sheets.
We will also observe how water flows into our parking lot and learn where it goes from there including the trash from the playground.
The GoPro camera will be used to document the children's work as they get the "ocean" clean.
Learning why we need to keep our ocean clean will help my students develop a lifelong awareness of their impact upon the environment.
This will move them to keep our playground clean and be careful when handling materials that can be dangerous for our ocean animals.
