Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
California's recent budget cuts have made the digital divide between my students and more wealthy students even greater. Our school already suffers from underfunding, so the recent budget cuts to education have not allowed students to learn in a classroom with updated technology.
Our school is in a low income community which suffers from both high unemployment and a high crime rate.
Students not only have to get into increasingly expensive colleges, but have to survive in an unsafe and stressful environment. Despite these struggles, our students come to school and do their best to navigate themselves into a better future for them and their community.
My Project
In order to prepare students for the next phase of the technological revolution in education, I need to teach how to save and transfer word and power point documents on flash drives. Although we do have access to the Internet and computers at school, few students have the resources to afford flash drives, thus many students lose files that they have worked on in other classes. Having a classroom set of flash drives will ensure that student work is not lost and will be easy to access.
The document camera will allow me to model teaching strategies that students will encounter once they reach college. In addition, this generation of high school students tends to be very visual, so having the document camera to show instead of just tell will allow my lessons to be more engaging and interesting.
The Occupy Wall Street protests have gotten the public's attention to focus on the ever increasing income gap between the rich and the poor.
My students have been part of the most neglected and forgotten part of the 99% for decades. Your donation will help us move a step closer to education equity in our school.
