Objects-Based Learning For Visually Impaired Students

My students need farm animals, play food and cooking/baking sets to help them understand and generalize concrete concepts as they are visually impaired.

My Students

What would your life be like if you couldn't see the world around you? How do you know what you are eating, what animals are around you, what transportation is available if you are not able to see? Do you trust your neighbor to tell you?

My classroom consists of middle school students with moderate to severe cognitive disabilities.

Our school is a separate school for this population of students. Students in my classroom have visually, motor, verbal, and cognitive impairments that limit their access to the general curriculum. I also have students who have identified Autism, PDD-NOS, and other disorders on the autism spectrum. This makes teaching difficult as I have to modify my lessons to each individual student to met each unique need.

My Project

I currently have a visually impaired student who has limited communication skills. She is not receiving braille or pre-braille services as she is not cognitively able to attain these skills yet. We are currently using objects and picture symbols that have been modified using various textures. The difficulty is that most concert skills are abstract because she does not have the ability to link to prior knowledge without using real or play objects that depict the real item. With the purchase of the items listed, this student will be able to relate to real world experiences using these objects to identify food, animals, and tools that could be used during instruction. This will help her to create an understanding of vocabulary used in the classroom and help her participate in lessons by making meaning choices.

This student is an older student who needs help navigating her environment using objects that are very similar to the real world objects.

For this urban student who does not have access to a farm, she can still feel the difference between a cow and pig using toy animals. She can make meaning food choices by feeling the food choices available to her, while maintaining a sanitary environment. Please help her black world by filling it with the feelings of the world around her!
