I teach at a new charter school in Maryland. We have been open for 3 years, and we are still in the process of building our school. This year, I will be teaching a new class called Non-Fiction studies, which is a U.S. History class with an emphasis on reading skills. Many of our students come in to our school reading significantly below grade level. This class, in addition to their regular English class, will be very helpful in giving these students the extra time to focus on building their reading skills.

Since this course is new, we have absolutely no resources. It is difficult to find reading materials that are able to be reproduced for all students. Without these materials it is impossible to teach reading skills. Also, many students in schools such as ours struggle with being engaged in school. They are often bored, especially by a subject such as history.

With the multimedia projector, I would be able to project a variety of different texts for the students including excerpts from novels, newspapers, political cartoons, graphic novels, pictures, and the list goes on forever. The projector would also allow for a lot of variety in class, which would help students stay engaged. They would be able to see history through a variety of different media, and this will help them to build their skills and enjoy learning at the same time.

Your help will ensure that my students are enjoying learning and that they become proficient readers while learning about their world. You will make it possible for my students to become ready for college and the real world!
