My Project

The On Strike read-aloud book series by Jennifer Jones will make a powerful difference in my 1st-grade class by helping students understand the importance of responsibility, empathy, and voice through engaging storytelling. As we read together, my students will build reading comprehension skills by making predictions, exploring character motivations, and discussing the cause and effect of the pencils' strike. This creative storyline captures the attention of young learners while reinforcing foundational literacy skills. My students are special because they approach learning with curiosity, resilience, and a heart full of kindness. Literature circles built around this series will give them the opportunity to share ideas, listen to others, and grow as collaborative learners—building confidence as readers and thinkers.

I can't wait to hear the collaborative conversations around the room once Mrs. Mixon's 1st grade class hears that the pencils, erasers, glue, crayons, scissors, chairs, swings and rulers all go on strike!

The goals of this project are: (1) to improve student engagement in reading through interactive read-alouds that connect to their daily lives; (2) to build comprehension and discussion skills using literature circles that promote critical thinking and peer learning; and (3) to create a culminating "puffy book" where each student authors and illustrates a page showing what they learned about communication, teamwork, and problem-solving from the series. This final product will give students a sense of pride and ownership in their learning, while also giving them the chance to reflect on how reading can be both meaningful and fun.
