I have an amazing group of kids! They are in a self-contained autism class that offers them the individualized attention they need. They have very diverse backgrounds and learn in unique ways. The students in my classroom are mostly non-verbal visual learners. They come from low socio-economic areas in the inner city of New York. My students may not have the same access to materials as other students, but that shouldn't stop them from getting the same education and exposure to the same material.
My Project
In our classroom food serves multiple purposes. Many of our students come into the classroom hungry and looking for food. Even though the school provides breakfast and lunch, this is not enough for our growing high school students. When a student is hungry they cannot concentrate on learning. It is essential for our students to receive the proper nutrition everyday.
Essentials such as food brings the students together and helps them learn.
In our classroom we work on functional goals to help the students be as independent as possible. Using food and drinks can help the students with many of these goals. Some of these include sharing, making drinks independently, measuring, passing out items, requesting items independently and many more. Snacks and drinks are not an extra in our classroom it is a necessity.
