Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The pandemic has drastically affected my students' educational experiences. Our classroom is now completely virtual, which poses many difficulties on top of the regular challenges of a classroom. However, distance learning has developed some deep authentic connections, allowed space to engage in profoundly honest conversations, and developed in my students an even greater resiliency than they had before. A special way we stayed connected during distance learning is through books.

Reading stories exposes my students to the world around them, often different than the world they know.

Through stories, students learn morals and lessons, vocabulary, social constructs, and cause and effect. We hold meaningful discussions around rich texts and they offer a great jumping-off point for their curious and growing minds.

My Project

As eager second graders, my students are at a very important age to understand the world around them. These materials will provide me with the tools to begin conversations about race, culture, and identity. I hope to create a more informed and aware generation that will grow up with the awareness to be able to change their world. These books also focus on social-emotional learning and nurture the whole child. It is important that my students return to school feeling safe, comfortable, loved, included, and motivated. This project will help spark important conversations about ourselves, others, and our society.
