Nurturing Scientists of the Future

My students need a set of Feel & Discover Science Bags and Learning Science Activity Tubs for Grades 1-3.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Karcz's classroom raised $690

This project is fully funded

The truth is I teach my classes as if each of my students will graduate from high school, go on to college, and look forward to a happy, healthy, productive life, but unfortunately, many of them will face tremendous obstacles before that becomes a reality.

One of my co-teachers was recently privileged to attend a workshop for teachers at the Museum of Natural History in New York with educators from all over the country, learning to utilize students' innate curiosity to guide their inquiry into science, math, and social studies concepts. I received a despairing text-message from her: "Just attended a planetarium presentation. I really feel like our kids have a cultural arts and science disadvantage." I texted back that when she returned we would put our heads together to determine a way to fill in the gaps. In the wake of a difficult economy nationwide, our area has been particularly hard hit. Many of our families struggle daily to cover basic needs, so trips to a museum, an aquarium, or the zoo are out of the question. Our public school district is struggling with big deficits and massive lay-offs, so field trips and supplemental materials are on hold. But while legislators and administrators try to allocate funds and balance budgets, in our classrooms, the learning must go on.

Fast forward fifteen or twenty years into the future, my students, like all citizens of the future, will be faced with careers requiring sophisticated technical and scientific knowledge. So in spite of budget constraints, my co-teachers and I have resolved to focus attention this year on scientific inquiry with the hopes that by capitalizing on their youthful curiosity, we can interest them in continuing to study science and math to prepare for technical careers. I have identified resources to boost my students' physical, earth and life science literacy. With your help, I can put the opportunity to do simple experiments with real materials in their hands. With the Science Activity Tubs, pairs of students will conduct simple experiments with soil and rocks, insects, force and motion, and weather topics. In the process, they will learn key vocabulary, enabling them to talk like scientists. The Feel and Discover: Animals, Earth, and Ocean Bags will provide the opportunity to discover natural wonders, then conduct simple, age-appropriate research. Each activity will finish with students writing about and drawing diagrams of their experiences.

One has only to pick up a newspaper or listen to the news to know the forecast for future jobs involves scientific and technical skills. By giving my students hands-on science materials, which they can touch and experiment with, you will help me nurture that spark of curiosity and prepare them for academic and career success.
