Nurturing Life-Long Readers

My Students

My students have a passion for learning about the world around them. As 4 and 5 years old, they are constantly asking questions and constantly want to know more. Their desire for knowledge is evident. In these fundamental years, I can see they are on their way to becoming life-long readers.

Our school is located in West Harlem (a Title I District).

Our student population is diverse and is made up of multiple ethnicities, ENL (English as a New Language), IEP (Individualized Education Program) students. Diversity within our school is something we embrace and nurture.

My Project

Every day, my kindergartners are learning the foundations of reading and growing as lifelong readers. On a daily basis, we participate in a reading workshop where students read independently and with a partner to build their reading skills. Space is limited in our classroom and my students need to sit on the rugs with their reading partners. Flexible seating will assist students by helping them to create their own reading space and helping them to stay focused and engaged during reading time.

Children learn best when they have a sense of ownership in what they are doing.

Our new book collection will be a welcome addition to our library and the soft seats will help students select and stay in their own quiet reading space during Reading Workshop.
