it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
First grade in a Title I school is a busy place! I often try to calm and help out multiple young students at a time. We are well aware of the effect the pandemic and technology has had on students and their families' emotions and well-being. Students are not coming to school with the same skills and emotional regulation as before the pandemic. I am asking for some tools to help my students with these needs. This is a Spanish-speaking classroom. Our school is bilingual, but resources always tend to lean on English. Our mental health staff does their best but often has trouble communicating with Spanish-speaking students and finding materials using their language. The poster and sensory toys would allow me to build a proper calm corner for students and also leave excess materials when I am dealing with more than one student. The privacy dividers help with academics but also can provide students with privacy when struggling or if the calm corner is not available. It would also provide students with a variety of books so they can explore these topics on their own time as well as books we can also use in lessons to explore these topics together.
Most importantly, it would allow students to express their emotions and learn about them in the language they are most comfortable in.
Spanish-speaking students are still often overlooked, even in bilingual schools, and I am hoping to bridge that gap. When I can more easily help students with their social-emotional needs, our entire classroom is a happier place!
