My Project
My students attend a Title I school and often lack essential foundational skills. One key area of focus is developing a strong understanding of mathematics, with particular emphasis on number sense as a fundamental component.
By cultivating a classroom environment that encourages mathematical thinking, I aim to help students become confident and proficient mathematicians, thereby supporting their overall mathematical development.
While mathematics can sometimes appear intimidating to students, understanding the underlying principles and the "why" behind mathematical concepts can transform their perception, making math an engaging and exciting subject. One huge way to do this is to have students engage in number talks - which often focus on diving deep into the "why" and "how" of mathematics.
Soon students will see that math isn't scary - it's actually a puzzle that is waiting for them to solve! As they understand the most general foundational skill, they will be able to apply their knowledge as they approach more rigorous mathematics. Number talks are a way for teachers and students to dive deep into understanding the "why" behind math in a safe and exciting way.
