Number the Stars will Help us Learn About the Holocaust
My students need 35 copies of the novel, Number the Stars, the novel's CD audiobook, a Reading Study Guide of the novel and pencils so they can learn about the Holocaust.
One of my favorite books for my fifth grade students to read is Number the Stars. It is a dramatic story about a non-Jewish family and friends helping a young Jewish girl hide from the Nazis during World War II in Denmark. Our only problem is that I have one copy of the book in my classroom library.
I teach an energetic and happy group of fifth graders in southern California.
Our school prides itself in integrating art and technology with our academic studies. I teach 30 students plus three students with autism visit my class everyday.
Last year over 48% of the students at our school qualified for free or reduced price lunch. We are a school with students from many different cultures, including students from Mexico, the Philippines, and South America. We do not have many students who are Jewish, and the majority have never heard of the Holocaust during World War II.
My Project
My students are at all reading levels. I have found that a classroom read aloud using a CD unabridged audiobook is a great way to hook in my readers and non-readers alike. I have requested a CD audiobook of the novel, Number the Stars, plus a class set of the paperback book too.
We will read this book as a whole class and discuss character motivation, and learn about the historical context during this time period. I have also requested an enhanced ebook which will help my students delve deeper into the details of the story. I have also requested pencils so my students can write about the characters, cultural conflicts, and the action in this novel.
Number the Stars is a fantastic book, and the few students who have read the book in past years have loved it. I am so excited that I will be able to share this book with my entire class this year and in future years.
Your help in donating to my project means that my students will be able to learn about the Holocaust and to have a deep understanding that we can make decisions to help others in need.
We will relate the theme of acceptance and helping others that comes up in the book to how we want to live our lives in our hometown and later as adults. Teaching compassion for others is just as important as learning math and reading skills. Your help in donating to this project is greatly appreciated!
