Number the Stars and Black Stallion - Novel Studies

My students need 10 copies each (plus the audio version) of "Number the Stars" and "Black Stallion" for our Novel Studies which includes improving our literacy, author's purpose, and learning the history involved!

My Students

Every morning we begin our day with a "Good Morning" to each other. Then we jump right into reading! Monday, we talk about the skills we are going to practice for the week. Tuesday through Friday, after reviewing the skills together, we go into centers. The Novel Studies is one of the centers!

We are a charter school, so I have various students with many different backgrounds.

Since I teach all of 4th grade reading, I have much differentiation to do with my students. What I can say about ALL of my students is the amount of energy is off the charts! I use every tool in my toolbox to use that energy in learning (which works very well)! My students are excited to learn new knowledge and build on previous knowledge. They are also wonderful helpers for me as well as helping out their peers! It is magnificent to have such a helpful and working community in my classroom!

My Project

Monday, I will be reading aloud part of the books. As a class, we will practice our reading skills. When we go into our centers (Tuesday through Friday) in reading, the students will be in a small group. While reading aloud to each other (to help with fluency among other skills), the students will be breaking apart the story for main idea, author's purpose, new ideas, context clues, inferences, and much much more! After reading the specific pages, students will have a group activity to go along with.

Students will be able to practice their many reading skills and learn to break about two different genres of books.

They will also learn another way of seeing the Holocaust in our non-fiction book!
