My Students
I work in an urban district that qualifies for both free breakfast and free lunch programs. The school we work in has a large percentage of children who speak English as a second language. We have children that are from Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Cape Verde and Haiti. The children, on top of speaking English as a second language, also have a variety of disabilities that affect their learning. Students often are diagnosed with Autism, Developmental Delays, Communication Disorders, and Medical Issues.
These wonderful children come to my specialized class in order to work on individual goals that are created on their Individual Education Plans.
They often travel across the city in order to attend this specialized classroom. The children often have limited opportunity to practice skills at home due to materials that are needed.
My Project
I teach in a Special Education Substantially Separate Classroom for Grades 3 and 4. My students have a variety of disabilities and learning styles, so it is essential I have a variety of hands-on activities for them to understand math concepts.
This year we are starting Number Talks to allow the students a deeper comprehension of Mathematical Concepts.
Using Rekenreks, Ten Frames, 1-100 Charts, and Dot Cards, this will allow the students to explore their thinking and allow me to assess their learning and thinking when it comes to mathematical concepts. We have started Number Talks, but we are in need of materials to go forward.
