Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember your parents pulling beans from the cupboard to help you complete your math homework? I have a room full of 1st graders that need concrete materials to touch and move around while they count, add, and subtract numbers.

My 1st grade students come with lots of enthusiasm for learning, but limited resources and experiences at home.

They are at an age when they are beginning to understand more abstract number concepts but still need concrete examples. Although, our school tries to supply students with the resources needed to build on mathematical concepts, the state's budget crisis makes it difficult for the school to provide more than paper and pencil. Each teacher has a limited supply of math manipulatives. Many times the materials are not enough for students to use more than one at a time, let alone for a small group. Because students also have limited experiences, it is hard to give them real life examples without tying them to concrete objects.

My Project

Math manipulatives will help build on the number concepts that my students are in the process of developing. Students will be able to physically move the double-sided counters when they are trying to count by ones, two’s, five’s, and ten’s. They will also be able to move the teddy counters closer when adding and away when subtracting. After, lots and lots of practice with the different materials, they will use the plastic coins to also apply these skills using money. Sounds simple, yet for a 1st grader having concrete materialsto solve math problems, such as number tiles and linking cubes, makes all the difference in the world.

Developing a strong number sense through the use of manipulatives is the building block of a successful future in math.

Your donation will help ensure that students have a solid math foundation for years and years to come.
