Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are dedicated, hardworking and ambitious. My students are from more than 20 different countries and speak many different languages including Spanish, French, Russian, Hebrew, and Italian to name a few.

Many of my students will be the first in their family to attend college in the United States.

The majority of my students have a strong financial need and hope to attend college on merit and need-based scholarships.

The school is located in an urban environment within Miami-Dade County.

My Project

Students in my Advanced Placement (AP) Statistics classes will use the new graphing calculators to facilitate deep understanding through better visualization of mathematical concepts. Students will also benefit from increased processing speed of these new calculators. Additionally, the use of a graphing calculator is required for the AP exam.

With better access to graphing calculator technology, my students will be more successful on their AP exams.

AP success will give my students a leg up in college since students will earn college with a few credits under their belts. Additionally, better technology will make math "cool"; hopefully, leading more students to select STEM majors in college and as their career.

My students want to succeed in school but are held back by older, antiqued technology. Although our physical school building is newer, most of our materials were "hand-me-downs" from other area schools when we opened. Currently, most of our calculator technology is more than 15 years old! Many of my students can not afford to purchase required calculators costing $150.
