Nspire-ation for the Un-Nspired (Part 2)

My students need to work dynamically with mathematical concepts using TI-Nspire CAS graphing handhelds.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Steines's classroom raised $542

This project is fully funded

One of my tasks as an algebra and pre-calc/stats teacher is to inspire my students to recognize and appreciate the beauty of patterns, the joy of problem solving, and the simple connectedness of mathematics. The unfortunate fact of the matter is that many of my students walk into my classroom feeling uninspired and fail to see how the math we are learning has any bearing on their daily lives.

The current initiative in our state is the Iowa Core Curriculum which strives “to ensure that all Iowa students have access to challenging and meaningful curriculum". The underlying goal is to make sure that all students are prepared for whatever comes next in their lives, whether it be a job in a 21st century market or coursework at a post-secondary institution. In the area of mathematics, the Iowa Core calls, among other things, for students to be able to "recognize and use connections among mathematical ideas, to understand how mathematical ideas interconnect and build on one another, and to recognize and apply mathematics in contexts outside of mathematics". In order to succeed at the next level, whether in the workforce or in college, students need to have experience problem solving, drawing connections, and accurately representing their ideas. My job is to provide students the opportunities for these experiences which will then lead to a better understanding of how mathematics impacts them. This is where you come in.

Your contribution will give my students access to the TI-Nspire CAS graphing handhelds. This will provide them with the opportunity to work with 21st century technology to answer 21st century problems. Using the TI-Nspire, my students will be able to work dynamically with mathematical concepts examining multiple connected representations of a concept. They can more easily explore conjectures and gain more experience doing the problem solving that will best prepare them for their future. My students will have the ability to manipulate one representation and immediately visualize the results of that manipulation. They will be more engaged and play a more interactive role in the work that we do. As a result, I hope my students will feel more inspired by the beauty of mathematics and gain a stronger appreciation for the problem solving processes in which they are taking part.

My goal is to have enough TI-Nspire CAS handhelds to provide each collaborative group of 3-4 students a calculator with which to work. This is part two of that effort. Your generosity will help me to provide a more inspiring learning environment for my students where multiple, dynamic representations are used to foster appreciation for mathematics.
