My Students

My students are a group of the most wonderful young adults with Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities you will ever meet. They live life to the fullest. They range in age from 14 to 19 and can stay with me until 21 years old. My students put forth their best effort every day and love learning new life skills especially cooking. The pots, pans, food storage items and utensils in my classroom are either second-hand donations or close to 15 years old when my classroom first opened.

Learning to cook is a pathway to independence for my students.

My students dream of one day living in supported apartments, having jobs and taking care of themselves. One of the key life skills they will need to learn is cooking. I have picture cookbooks, but we aren't cooking much right now because our teflon pots and pans began flaking and had to be thrown out. Our food storage wasn't BPA free and our electric skillet died. My students have goals on their IEPs that involve cooking and food storage, so we borrow cooking supplies from another class. We sure would like our own so we can cook more often. Please help us learn cooking skills!

My Project

My students have goals on their IEPs that require them to learn cooking and food storage skills. Cooking is a life skill that will help them on their path to independence. We currently have to borrow cooking supplies from another class because our supplies were too old to use.

Flaking teflon and food storage containing BPA aren't safe for cooking and storing.

I can teach the students different recipes and they can go home and contribute to family life by cooking for their families. Cooking for their families will bring a sense of accomplishment and show parents/caregivers generalization from the classroom to the home. I want to teach the students how to make whole foods and not rely on processed foods from a package.
