This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are a vibrant bunch of boys and girls who just want to be able to learn just like everyone else. Their intellectual disabilities often prevent that from happening. They all have different backgrounds.

My students are a mixture of nationalities, languages, and disabilities.

This is part of what makes them special. What they have in common is trauma, poverty, and a desire to learn despite their disabilities. Most of these are not qualities they are proud of, but they deal with what they are given. The results are mixed, but their drive never stops.

My Project

So many of my students do not have the skills to make a simple sandwich or use the microwave when they are hungry. I am asking for a microwave oven, crockpot, blender, cooking and cleaning supplies. With these materials, my students can learn to prepare an area for cooking, safely use common kitchen appliances and items to cook or make a simple meal, and clean up afterwards, including doing dishes.

My purpose in teaching is to help my students be as independent as possible, and to help them become productive members of society.

Learning these life skills is so important to their futures. I hope to also take these skills and use them outside of the classroom. Students could help kitchen staff clean up after lunch periods after some training in the classroom, which could easily lead to a bussing (cleaning tables in a restaurant) or dish washing job in the future. The possibilities are endless.
