This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work at a high-poverty school. Most of my students did not attend preschool and receive free or reduced-price lunch. Many of these children are English learners, so while they are learning the essential basic skills for their educational foundation, they are also learning a new language!

My students generally come to me with little or no prior experience with using academic tools such as pencils or crayons.

They make incredible gains in this one short year of school. They are absolutely amazing kids!

My Project

I am requesting a variety of hands-on materials for my students to utilize while learning about letters and sounds. Young children learn so much by doing and I believe in providing them with numerous opportunities throughout the day to practice and apply their new knowledge in fun ways.

Allowing students to participate in open-ended kinesthetic activities helps them learn more.

Being able to touch and manipulate an object, such as dough to form letters, or magnets to create the shapes of letters, or even the pieces of a puzzle to create the alphabet helps solidify the learning process by allowing students to physically participate in the learning process versus simply listening to new information.
