My Students

"We can't hear!" My students are constantly complaining that they can't hear the learning from my laptop computer. They are missing out on our school's daily TV production, video clips, and more because the sound is too muffled from the laptop.

My kindergarten class of 25, named the Corduroy Kids, is a very active group of children.

They attend an elementary school in California with high test scores and a dedicated staff of teachers willing to try new things and incorporate technology in their classrooms. My students love to learn when they come to school and are ready for anything. They love to be engaged by technology in different ways, whether it is as a whole group, in partners, or individually. The problem is: they can't always hear what's going on. I have 14 boys and 11 girls and sometimes the classroom is noisy! They love to learn, but with so many bodies in the room, sound from electronics gets swallowed up. I need amplification to keep them focused and engaged while I use technology.

My Project

Given these listening aides, things would change drastically in my classroom. I will be able to show my school's daily production of our TV show and the children will actually be able to hear the valuable messages being relayed such as the daily Words of Wisdom which impart good character. When I show a video clip, the children won't have to strain to hear it, but it will be loud and clear. A boombox will amplify sound as well as give my students the chance to do movement and learning activities using the kinesthetic learning modality. In addition, headphones will give the children the individual support they need by allowing them to be on computers or iPads without disrupting others or being disrupted themselves. All three of these listening devices, although for different uses, will greatly impact the learning in my kindergarten classroom.

Preparing our students for 21st Century learning includes technology.

I am lucky enough to have a laptop to use for students' learning, but there are many missed opportunities because of the lack of sound. I'd like to be able to use the different kinds of technology in a way that will meet the needs of all learners in my classroom. Speakers, headphones, and a boombox will help our classroom to utilize technology effectively.
